Panoramic Views in Kinderhook, Chatham & New Lebanon 70 Minute Tour
Starting with panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains from bluffs overlooking the Hudson River, this trip winds through picturesque little valleys lined with old farmhouses, estates, and finishes at the foot of the Berkshires.
Begin your tour driving on Rt 9J until you reach Stuyvesant, then turn at the blinking yellow light on to County Rt 26A heading east. When you come to Rt 9, make a left and continue into historic Kinderhook. At the traffic light in the village center, turn right on to Hudson Street, which will soon become County Rt 21*. Follow the signs for Ghent, and, when you arrive at a T-intersection, make a right, staying on Rt 21 until you reach Rt 66. A left on to Rt 66 will take you through the quaint village of Chatham, and eventually, to a bridge in charming Chatham Center; turn at the sharp right just before the bridge on to County Rt13** and drive into Old Chatham, then make a right on to the Albany Turnpike Road. When you reach a stop sign (in East Chatham), turn left on to Rt295. A left just after the sign for Queechy Lake will bring you on to County Rt 30, which bends around this picturesque lake and intersects with Rt 22. Make a left on to Rt 22, then a right on to Rt 20 and follow signs for Mount Lebanon Shaker Village.
*For an historical side trip, head south about three-quarters of a mile on Rt 9H and visit the Luykas Van Alen House. Just over a mile further south, also on the right, is the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.
**The Shaker Museum and Library is located a half-mile off County Rt 13 on Shaker Museum Road.
