A Guide to Road and Mountain Bicycling in Columbia County

Columbia County’s unsurpassed rural beauty makes cycling through pastoral countryside, historic villages and scenic vistas unique to this area. The loops illustrated on the map break the territory into pleasurable, sometimes challenging rides of various lengths and ability levels. Every effort has been made to create rides that are safe however some segments may place riders on roads with fast moving traffic. Please wear a helmet, bright clothing, and use bicycle lights; obey all traffic laws. Enjoy the ride!

Hand Hollow State Forest

Columbia County’s newest State Forest: 518 acres of wooded property, open brush land and a 10-acre lake available for hiking, biking, paddling and non-motorized boating, picnicking, horseback riding (except on foot trails and snowmobile/ski trails when snow covered), primitive camping, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife observation and photography. There are currently no official trails on the property.

Harlem Valley Rail Trail

A paved bicycle/pedestrian path built on the old railroad bed that connected New York City, the Harlem Valley, and Chatham

Martin Van Buren Nature Area and Wayside Park

Several trails which pass through the park or are nearby which you can enjoy while visiting Martin Van Buren NHS. The trails allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and interesting history while you stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air.
