All of Us: Portraits of the Ghent Bicentennial, by Richard Beaven
In celebration of the 2018 Bicentennial of Ghent NY, Art Omi presents All of Us: Portraits of the Ghent Bicentennial, a series of photographs of Ghent residents captured throughout 2018 by photographer Richard Beaven. (All of Us will be on display in the Greenburger Café of the Benenson Center from December 5 – 10, 2018).
All of Us is a broad photographic survey of the present-day Ghent citizenry, and includes portraits of 275 residents, or nearly 5% of the total population of 5,400. “By creating a snapshot of the Ghent community during its bicentennial year, this collection of portraits provides a record for the future,” said Beaven. “Photographs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries … often serv[e] as our only tactile document of history. This project is my response: a ‘box of prints in the basement’ from today which can be rediscovered and held by the community of tomorrow.”
All of Us is the final in a yearlong series of events commemorating the 200th anniversary of Ghent’s founding in 1818. Other highlights included the Ghent Community Day and Parade on October 13, 2018, and the publication of Ghent 1818-2018: A History of Our Own, by Town Historian Gregg Berninger. “The level of interest and participation from the public far exceeded our expectations,” said Ghent Town Councilwoman Patti Matheney. “Richard’s ambitious project provides one photographer’s view of a rich community life. He went about this project with a passion that reflects his feelings and vision of the place he calls home.”
