Pan

Friday, July 16

Pan, a “pagan” celebration of the post-pandemic rebirth, nature and community, explores in seven tableaux the life of the god Pan, one of only two Greek deities said to have been put to death. It marshals myth to articulate and explore the tensions of our contemporary lives and world. MacArthur Fellow Claire Chase, flute soloist, is joined by a chorus of nonprofessional actors who lament for Pan and evoke his spirit. Periodically, they also punctuate the soundscape with tuned wine glasses, ocarinas, triangles, bamboo chimes, and other handheld instruments. Jennifer Judge, a musicologist who has followed the development of “Pan, writes: “The genesis . . . amounts to the creation not just of a work of art, but of a community.” Alex Ross, writing for The New Yorker, describes the experience of the opera as, “The cult of the godlike artist gives way to a collective ceremony—art as grassroots action.”
