We are launching our 2021 season with Heartbeat Opera in residence developing The Extinctionist, the company’s first commissioned work, which will premiere in the Pavilion Theater. This will be the first of three Modern Opera Fest productions.
With The Extinctionist, Louise Proske, Heartbeat’s director, gives dramatic shape to the frightening question of whether to bring children into a world threatened with environmental apocalypse. A woman wonders, What if the best way to protect her daughter is not to give birth to her? What if saving the planet demands that she sterilize herself—become the first “Extinctionist”?
Proske’s collaborators include Amanda Quaid, adapted the libretto from her one-act play, composer David Schlosberg, and music director Jacob Ashworth.
Zachary Woolfe in the New York Times called Heartbeat Opera “bracing—icy vodka shots of opera.”
Anthony Tommasini wrote that “this small, adventurous company strives to make opera a visceral, intimate and immediate ‘encounter’”.
The Extinctionist will be followed by Pan (July 16) and Ipsa Dixit (September 3-4).
