Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is back at the Mac-Haydn. Having paved the way for contemporary musical theatre, RENT is a beloved cultural phenomenon, known for its raw, resonant storytelling and remarkable rock score.
Inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, RENT follows a year in the life of seven New Yorkers on the Lower East Side. As these young, impoverished artists struggle to create, the group navigates major life changes, relationship struggles, fulfillment of dreams, the loss of loved ones, and living in the age of HIV/AIDS. Together, their stories paint a stunningly emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City, and emphasize the power of meaningful human connection in a time of crisis.
